Effective study skills are the soul foundation of a sound education.
The intention of this essay is to discuss if ‘Effective Study Skills Are The Sole Foundation Of A Sound Education. To do this we need to understand what effective study skills are and what is termed as a sound education, along with other contributing factors. Study skills are attributes the learner has developed which help them learn. Good students manifest by using good study skills and good practise. Self-evaluation to understand what type of learning style suits the learner best, visual, auditory or kinaesthetic and knowing how to apply it is paramount. By personalising the approach and using strategies that suit the strengths, interest and circumstances of the learner, promotes good learning. Time management, active listening, reading, comprehension, presentation skills, memory techniques, critical analytical thinking, research and evaluation skills are categorised as study skills. Cottrell (2008) explains ‘a skill is a learned activity, something that can be developed through good practice'. Wikipedia (2012) defines study skills as ‘techniques to assist the individual learner to be an efficient learner'. Having access to a sound education does not guarantee success. The individual learner must want to succeed and be able through self-evaluation learn how to achieve their best. Task awareness and understanding how to access objectives, goals and opportunities and re develop them. Having ownership of your work increases confidence and self-esteem. ‘Personalize your approach – strategies that suit your strengths, interest and circumstances'. Learning skills can be a natural attribute or as for most people a developed skill. Biggs and Purdie suggest' (1996) ‘study skills can be taught and lead to one to two grades increase as a result'. This is intelligent study and with practice becomes automatic. Having a sound education can be a ten plate for future learning, however people's ideas differ over that is called a ‘Sound Education'. ‘In the 1980s to have achieved 5 o levels was considered a reasonable achievement, today employers have a much higher standard'. In conclusion, effective study skills are the soul foundation of a sound education for independent learners for example on an e course, as they are in control of their own learning. However for most no one item can be responsible for the sole foundation of a sound education.
